Can I Choose My Own NDIS Services?

Can I Choose My Own NDIS Services?

Yes — one of the key features of the NDIS is that it empowers participants with choice and control. This means you have the freedom to decide how your NDIS services are delivered and who delivers them.

With the NDIS, you can choose:

  • What types of NDIS services you receive — such as personal care, transport, community access, or therapy

  • When you receive support — whether it’s daily, weekly, or on a flexible schedule

  • Where services are delivered — in your home, out in the community, or a combination of both

  • Who provides your NDIS supports — you can select providers you trust and feel comfortable with

This flexibility ensures your NDIS plan reflects your lifestyle, routines, and personal goals. Whether you self-manage your plan, use a plan manager, or have your plan managed by the NDIA, you still have the right to be involved in all decisions about your supports.

Choosing the right NDIS service providers can make a big difference to your experience. You can explore and compare providers, read reviews, and even switch providers if you’re not satisfied. The NDIS puts you at the centre of your support — giving you the power to build a team that works for you.

Who Is Eligible for NDIS Services?

Eligibility for NDIS services is determined by specific criteria set by the National Disability Insurance Scheme. The aim of the NDIS is to support individuals with permanent and significant disabilities, helping them live independently and participate more fully in daily life and the community.

You may be eligible for NDIS services if you:

  • Are between the ages of 7 and 65

  • Live in Australia and are either an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or hold a Protected Special Category Visa

  • Have a permanent and significant disability that affects your ability to take part in everyday tasks without support

A permanent and significant disability might affect mobility, communication, learning, social interaction, or self-care. Eligibility also considers whether early intervention through NDIS services could reduce the impact of your disability over time.

If you’re unsure whether you qualify, you can contact the NDIS directly or begin the process through an Access Request Form. Understanding the NDIS access requirements can feel overwhelming, but there are resources and professionals available to assist you.

The most important step is gathering medical evidence that clearly outlines the impact of your condition and how it affects your daily life. Once approved, you’ll work with a planner or Local Area Coordinator to design an NDIS plan that includes the supports most relevant to your needs.

What’s the Difference Between Core Supports and Capacity Building in the NDIS?

NDIS services are grouped into categories to help participants understand and manage their funding more effectively. Two key types are Core Supports and Capacity Building Supports — and while they may sound similar, they serve different purposes.

Core Supports

These are everyday supports designed to help you complete daily tasks and live as independently as possible. They include:

  • Assistance with personal activities (like showering or dressing)

  • Transport to access community activities or appointments

  • Consumables such as continence products or low-cost equipment

  • Support with community participation

Core NDIS services are flexible, meaning you can usually shift funds between different core support categories depending on your needs.

Capacity Building Supports

These services aim to develop your skills, confidence, and long-term independence. They’re usually goal-specific and include:

  • Support coordination

  • Improved daily living skills (such as therapy or training)

  • Employment-related supports

  • Social and relationship development

  • Plan management services

Unlike Core Supports, Capacity Building funds are allocated to specific categories and can’t be shifted between them.

Knowing the difference helps you better plan how to use your NDIS funding to achieve short-term support and long-term personal growth.

How Can I Manage My NDIS Funding?

Managing your NDIS funding effectively is essential to getting the most out of your supports. The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) offers three funding management options, each with its own balance of flexibility and responsibility. Choosing the right method depends on how involved you want to be in handling the financial side of your NDIS services.

1. NDIA-Managed

With this option, the NDIS (via the National Disability Insurance Agency) handles payments directly to registered providers. You don’t have to worry about invoices or record-keeping, and all financial reporting is taken care of. However, you can only use NDIS-registered providers, which may limit your choices. This method is ideal if you prefer a hands-off approach to managing your NDIS supports.

2. Plan-Managed

A plan manager, funded through your NDIS plan, looks after your budgets, invoices, and financial tracking. You still maintain choice and control over your NDIS services, and you can work with both registered and unregistered providers. This is a popular option for those who want flexibility without having to manage all the admin themselves.

At AK Support Services, we regularly work with participants who have plan-managed funding, helping them use their NDIS plan to its full potential.

3. Self-Managed

Self-managing your NDIS funding gives you the highest level of control. You pay providers directly, keep receipts, and manage your own budget. You can hire unregistered providers, negotiate rates, and personalise your supports more extensively. While this option gives you maximum flexibility, it also comes with added responsibilities, including compliance with NDIS financial reporting requirements. No matter how your NDIS funding is managed, the focus is always the same: helping you access the right supports, maintain independence, and reach your goals. If you’re unsure which option is right for you, our team can help you understand your choices and navigate your NDIS plan with confidence.

What if My Circumstances Change During My NDIS Plan?

Life isn’t static, and the NDIS recognises that your needs may change over time. Whether it’s a shift in your health, living arrangements, personal goals, or the level of support you require, you can request changes to your NDIS plan to ensure your supports continue to meet your needs.

If your situation changes, you can:

  • Request a plan review – If your current NDIS services no longer reflect your circumstances, you can apply for a Change of Situation review.

  • Prepare supporting evidence – Medical reports, support letters, or therapist assessments can help show why a review is needed.

  • Work with your support coordinator – They can guide you through the process, help gather documents, and liaise with the NDIS on your behalf.

Common reasons for updating your NDIS plan include:

  • A new or worsening disability diagnosis

  • Starting or finishing school or work

  • Moving to a new home or supported accommodation

  • Needing more or different NDIS supports, such as personal care or transport

  • Gaining more independence and wanting to reduce certain supports

No matter the reason, the goal of the NDIS is to give you flexibility and control. Keeping your plan current means your NDIS services continue to support your goals, lifestyle, and wellbeing — both now and into the future.

If you’re unsure about how to update your plan or whether you’re eligible for a review, AK Support Services can help you navigate the process.
